Meet Tash Broadhead: Fashioning Retail Success

Tash Broadhead knows what it means to build something lasting, from the ground up. As the owner of Soul & Co., a staple of Timaru’s retail scene, her journey is an example of how a career in retail can grow into business ownership, and how the CBD continues to support and shape thriving local enterprise.

Her story began at 18 with a part-time job at Miss Timaru. With a natural eye for style and a deep love for fashion, her passion soon led her to Soul Surf & Skate, where she embraced opportunities for growth and eventually stepped into the role of buyer. In 2007, when the chance to purchase the business came along, she took it – transforming her path from employee to owner and turning a dream into reality.

Today, Soul & Co. is known for its curated blend of casual and elevated fashion for all ages. Tash brings her personal touch to every aspect of the business, from selecting on trend and timeless, comfortable pieces to building genuine relationships with customers. “We only sell what we personally love and wear,” she says. That authenticity shows and it’s one reason Soul & Co. has stood the test of time.

The business is now approaching two decades under her leadership, a milestone few achieve in a retail landscape that has evolved rapidly. Tash has navigated major challenges, including the global pandemic which reshaped how people shop and how businesses operate. Yet through it all, she has continued to adapt, ensuring the store remains relevant, sustainable, and responsive to her community. “Soul & Co. is always evolving,” she says. “We’ve stayed here because we believe in this place.”

Tash’s belief in the CBD runs deep. “It’s the heart of Timaru,” she says. “Everything you need is right here – one street, great parking, and a growing sense of vibrancy.” She’s seen firsthand how weekend trading has brought new energy, and how people travel from other cities just to experience what Timaru’s central retail district has to offer.

For aspiring entrepreneurs, Tash offers this encouragement, “Retail is a rewarding career, it’s creative, busy, and fun. When you find something you love, it never really feels like work.” She also points to the importance of relationships: “The proudest part of owning this business is the friendships we’ve made with our customers and staff. That connection is everything.”

Supporting other local businesses is part of that community spirit. When asked about her favourite spots in the CBD, Tash doesn’t hesitate: “The Oxford, Mrs M’s, and Health 2000 are all fantastic. We’re so lucky to have such a great mix of places right here in town.”

When she’s not working, Tash focuses on what matters most, her family. “I spend my time with my family, drinking coffee, and enjoying Caroline Bay’s Dashing Rocks,”
