Meet Shaun Stockman: A Champion of Heritage and Heart.
Shaun Stockman, Founding Director of Stockman Group Limited, has been investing in people and places since 1979. At just 24, he purchased his first investment property and what started as a single venture has grown into an extensive property portfolio, with many of his most treasured buildings located right in the heart of Timaru.
Stockman Group specialises in offering high-quality retail and office spaces that give local businesses room to grow and succeed. “We offer spaces where people can create something that works for them, where they can prosper” says Shaun.
Although his property journey didn’t begin in Timaru, Shaun quickly developed a deep connection with the city’s architectural history. He was captivated by the CBD’s exceptional collection of heritage buildings and committed himself to preserving them. Today, he splits his time between Christchurch and his apartment in the iconic Perry & Perry Building on Stafford Street, originally built in 1869. “Timaru has some of the best heritage stock I’ve seen anywhere,” he says. “It’s always exciting to come back.”
That passion has translated into action. One of Shaun’s proudest achievements is completing the earthquake strengthening of his CBD buildings, a complex project that required careful coordination with tenants and heritage professionals. “It was a challenge, but with the right people involved, including David Fridd, we got there. And the results are something I’m proud of every time I walk down the street.”
Shaun’s commitment to the CBD runs far deeper than property. He’s a familiar face around town, and when asked about his favourite local spots, he doesn’t hesitate: “The Oxford for dinner, and Mrs Ms for coffee. You can’t beat them.” It’s this everyday presence, not just ownership, that speaks to his genuine connection to the area. “I don’t just invest here, I live here, spend time here, and believe in what this place can offer.”
This year, Shaun will celebrate a major milestone – the Oxford Building’s 100th birthday. It’s a moment that reflects both legacy and future, and a reminder of how one person’s vision can help shape a city’s character.
Beyond business, Shaun dedicates significant time to community service. He sits on the boards of eight charities, six of which focus on supporting children and people in need. “It’s one of the most fulfilling parts of my life,” he shares. “Business is important, but giving back is just as vital.”
His advice for aspiring business owners? “Plan carefully, stay focused, and don’t buy into fear during economic downturns. If you follow your passion and learn from others, success will follow. “The founder of Walmart, Mr Walton when asked how he felt about the great depression – he said I’m not participating!”
Shaun Stockman is a property investor, a guardian of heritage, a believer in people and a proud part of The Exchange story.
