Meet Brent & Aimee White: Crafting Legacy at The Ringmakers
This year marks 40 years of The Ringmakers, a milestone that celebrates both tradition and evolution for one of South Canterbury’s most trusted jewellery stores. At the centre of its continued success are Brent and Aimee White, the husband-and-wife duo leading the business with craftsmanship, care, and a shared commitment to excellence.
Brent’s journey began in 1993 when he started his jewellery apprenticeship under the store’s original owners, Graeme and Chris Castle. He quickly developed skills across all areas of the craft – from design and gemstone setting to customer service and repairs. In 2016, Brent and Aimee purchased the business, continuing the collaborative ownership model that had served the store so well.
Aimee, a former secondary school English teacher, made the shift into retail after time at home with their children, Olivia and George. “Those early years were a steep learning curve,” she says. “But I was fortunate to be supported by experienced people in the industry as I found my place.” Today, she leads the store’s operations, staff management and customer service, bringing a thoughtful, organised approach to daily business.
Brent, meanwhile, remains focused on bespoke jewellery design and in-house craftsmanship. In recent years, he earned his Master Jeweller’s certificate, a significant milestone that formally recognises his decades of hands-on expertise. “It’s an honour,” he says, “but what matters most is helping people celebrate the meaningful moments in their lives.”
The Ringmakers has built its reputation on quality and personal service. Alongside expert repairs and in-house custom pieces, the store offers a carefully curated range of brands including Citizen, Bulova, Pandora, Karen Walker, and Stolen Girlfriends Club. Aimee says their strong reputation is the result of consistent effort from the whole team. “It takes a lot to maintain high standards, but when everyone’s on board, it shows.”
For others considering business ownership, Aimee is clear-eyed: “You need to love what you do. The challenges and sacrifices are real, so enjoying the process, or at least some part of it is essential.”
Brent and Aimee are also proud supporters of Timaru’s evolving central city. “There’s a real sense of momentum,” Brent says. “More people, more energy – it’s exciting to be part of that.” They’re strong advocates for shopping and dining locally, though Aimee says choosing favourites is impossible. “We’re spoiled for choice, there are so many great spots in the CBD.”
Outside the store, the Whites enjoy time in nature with their kids, exploring art, history, and making time to recharge through reading and shared adventures.
AsThe Ringmakers celebrates 40 years, Brent and Aimee continue to honour its legacy, shaping meaningful experiences, supporting local, and keeping craftsmanship at the heart of everything they do.
